ResumoIn Brazil, pasture areas, which occupy about 21% of the national territory, have an enormous potential as land reserves and providers of environmental services. In particular, this is the case of the pastures encountered in the Cerrado biome in Central Brazil, the second largest biome in South America, and recognized as the most biodiverse savanna in the world. Of the two million km2 that make up the Cerrado biome, approximately 50% are converted into anthropic areas, including about 48 Mha of planted pastures, of which ~57% show signs of degradation (according to MapBiomas Collection 6 data for 2020). In order to better understand the conditions, dynamics and use potential of the Cerrado pastures, an important agricultural frontier region on a global perspective, we recently concluded an unprecedented field survey, in which 460 pasture points, distributed according to a robust statistical design, were evaluated in relation to the physiological development stage, presence of weeds, incidence of mound building termite nests, soil coverage, forage availability, green leaves availability, current condition and pasture's productive potential. Based on these parameters, the 460 samples were categorized into five classes, i.e. non-degraded pastures, pastures with intermediate or severe signs of agronomic or biological degradation. For each point, a complete Landsat time series (i.e. gapfilled via TMWM) was extracted (1985 to 2021, every 16 days), which were enhanced according to six spectral vegetation indices (e.g. EVI, NDVI), based on which, 12 phenological metrics were derived via the R greenbrown package (e.g. start-of-season, end-of-season, rates of green-up and senescence). The use of a multinomial logistic regression model on the 2018 dataset, and considering 12 AIC_based selected covariates, yielded a 48% overall accuracy, with major confusions related to the intermediate biological and non-degraded pasture classes. These results, although very preliminary, corroborate towards improved Cerrado pasture maps, including more precise and accurate pasture degradation assessment at the biome scale.
